Master Programme in Health at work 120 cr

Would you like to work with the occupational health of the future? Today, many work from home, older adults have to remain longer in working life, and sick leave due to stress continues to rise. With a strategic education in occupational health science, you can see the whole picture and take on many important challenges.

A sustainable working life

Our work is a major part of our lives and affects our well-being. As an occupational health professional, you focus on an important area for public health. You work with a sustainable working life; sustainability is important as our working life affects our well-being even as we grow older.

The programme at University of Gävle is unique. Here, our focus is on health in working life, which in turn can affect work performance, quality, safety, and productivity. The subject is broad, and occupational health science and work environment issues will be highlighted from different angles. Both teachers and students contribute to this breadth, as most have different backgrounds and experiences. Working life is constantly changing. In our programme, you will always be updated, as we work closely with the University's researchers.

Broad and flexible education

In the programme, you will receive knowledge that is useful in working with human resources and working life issues in companies and organisation; we focus on how people react to physical and mental strain and how we can prevent occupational injuries. You will also be provided with in-depth knowledge on workplace health, safety and welfare regulations that apply and on how to organize work to promote employee well-being.

The programme is suitable for you even if you live in another place, or perhaps work part time. Teaching is online and you can choose between studying half-time and full-time. It is also possible to finish after half the programme and obtain degree of master (60 credits)

Your future profession

After the programme, you can work with human resources, working life issues and work environment issues in companies and organisations of various sizes. Therefore, your duties may vary. It could be about addressing risks in the work environment or about working strategically with organisational and social work environment issues. You can work in occupational health care, as a work environment consultant, as a process leader, as support for management in work environment issues, or in HR.

The programme also provides basic eligibility for third-cycle studies. At University of Gävle, for example, there are third-cycle courses and study programmes in health-promoting working life.

Labour market

Staff with updated knowledge of systematic work environment work are in demand. This demand does not seem to be diminishing. Companies and organizations need the expertise to create a sustainable work environment that appeals to their current as well as to new employees.

An increasing number of employers know how important it is to focus on social sustainability. Good occupational health provides a competitive advantage, both for recruiting and retaining staff. Many also recognize its connection to performance and quality. Employee well-being affects employee performance. In addition, we have a changing working life. This means that there will be many exciting assignments for future occupational health professionals.

Prerequisites

  • Degree at the undergraduate level that includes at least 180 ECTS credits
  • 30 ECTS credits in any of the subjects medicine, psychology, sports, fitness, public health science, pedagogy, nursing science, rehabilitation, leadership, organization and governance or other adequate subject.

In addition, knowledge of Swedish and English is required, corresponding to what is required for basic eligibility for Swedish higher education at the undergraduate level.
