International summer school about social networks and travel behaviour

Sommarskola GIS

There is an international summer school this week run by Professor Bin Jiang, with participants from many different countries.

Social networks and travel behaviour

The summer school focuses on an analysis of social networks and travel behaviour, with the help of for example OpenStreetMap, Twitter and other location-based social media.

Professor Bin Jiang at the University of Gävle is the main instructor together with two other professors, Marija Mitrovic Dankulov, University of Belgrade och Toshi Osaragi, Tokyo Institute of Technology.

New type of analysis

“The analysis that we do now is fundamentally different from that which one can do with the existing GIS data,” says Bin Jiang.

“The summer school also includes lectures, discussions and several practical tasks with the help of a tool that we have developed ourselves – Axwoman; a tool that is frequently used by students, town planners and designers around the world.”

An acknowledgement

The summer school is one of many activities within the European programme “Social networks and travel behaviour” and all twenty one participants are sponsored by the project.

“All participants are selected young researchers, doctors, postdoctoral scholarship holders. The summer school is an acknowledgement of the strength and importance of geospatial information sciences here at the University of Gävle,” says Bin Jiang.
