Reading aloud to your children up till the age of three is vital for your children’s future language development. Many researchers and lecturers at the University of Gävle now participate in the project “Bokstart.”

A small, red finger puppy called Bella is going to help stimulate children’s interest in reading. Bella is part of the project “Bokstart” which involves librarians, researchers, district nurses at child health care centres, preschool teachers and speech therapists.
“What is captivating about this project is the fact that we are so many participants sharing the same goal. How much we read aloud to children at an early age determines what their vocabulary will look like when they are teenagers,” says Elisabeth Björklund, senior lecturer, emerita, in curriculum studies at the University of Gävle.

In the project, a “book starter,” for instance a librarian, will visit child health care centres to hand out book bags at a time when many six-months old babies with their parents are gathered.
“The book starter informs the parents why it is so important to read together from an early age, and how you read to a baby who is so young,” Christine Wennerholm says. She is a strategist specialised in regional library activities at Region Gävleborg.
