This is an incredibly broad area that spans everything from people’s existential issues all the way to how to solve technical components in infrastructure.

“The objective of our effort is that the knowledge developed in the research on Urban Sustainability shall benefit society much faster”, says Stephan Barthel, Research Leader.

The sustainable city is a complex living system, which among other things consists of the people who live in the city, the technical systems and the economic systems and where everything interacts and is developed.

The strength in the focus on interdisciplinary research is that it will increase the knowledge of sustainable urban development from many different perspectives.

“This is an incredibly broad area that spans everything from people’s existential issues all the way to how to solve technical components in infrastructure.”

A central part is the research school Future Proof Cities, where doctoral students work out at the companies on the research front within sustainable urban development. A collaboration between the municipality, industry and academia that will directly contribute to detailed solutions in the on-going urbanisation.

“What drives me is that the city at its best is a fantastic place to live in, but at its worst a horrible place to be. So it is possible to do so much right, but also possible to do so much wrong and it has huge consequences both for people and for our entire planet,” says Stephan Barthel.
