You will study five modules in total within this course.

Please note that the modules are not taught in the order above, and that some of them are taught in parallel.

You can find the preliminary course schedule with times and dates in Kronox four weeks before the course starts. This course is taught in two formats, distance (Distans) and campus (Normal), so please make sure you find the distance group’s schedule. Most seminars will take place online, in our Zoom meeting room, but the distance course also includes on-campus meetings and exams. Please note that the time and date for seminars and exams in the modules taught in the second half of the term may not have been decided on at the start of the term, so you must be prepared for additions or changes to the schedule. The first modules’ syllabi and detailed schedules with reading instructions will be available on Canvas two weeks before the course starts.

You are required to attend the online and on-campus seminars to receive a passing grade. Most seminars require active participation, and they are not recorded. All modules also feature compulsory written and oral assignments (examinerande uppgifter). Language Structure ends with a written exam on the HiG campus or at any authorized exam location. More information on the examination format for each module can be found in the syllabus (kursplan).

To participate fully in this course, it is important that you prepare well for the seminars by reading instructed parts of the course literature. You should be able to discuss models and issues brought up in the literature rather than topics in general. Therefore, it is important that you get hold of the literature well in time for the relevant sessions. A good idea is to order the books indicated in the reading list during the summer vacation. You will find a link to the syllabus and reading list in the first section of the welcome letter. In the module “Contemporary Literature in English”, only three of the novels in the reading list will be studied this term: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. You should also order Teaching Literature to Adolescents by Richard Beach et al. The other methodological literature, Literature in the Language Classroom by Joanne Collie and Stephen Slater, will not be part of the obligatory reading. During the module, the instructor will also select one book of young adult literature based on the students’ proposals. For the other modules, you should order all the titles below the heading “Kurslitteratur”, since this section lists obligatory course literature, with the exceptions mentioned above. The section “Referenslitteratur” lists non-obligatory literature. You do not have to read these books, but they are interesting and relevant texts if you want to study a topic in more depth.

Since the course runs at 100%, you must be prepared to allocate 40 hours of study per week, including class attendance, reading and writing assignments. Studying for 30 credits in one term is like a full-time job.

It is important that you register for the course in Ladok as soon as registration opens. This will give you access to our course page in Canvas two weeks before the course starts. Canvas will be our main channel for communication, and this is where you will find material about our course, such as the timetable, instructions, assignments, etc. This is also where the different instructors will post general announcements concerning the course and the individual sessions. Your instructors will use the email client to send individual messages when necessary. Therefore, check the Canvas page and the email you used to register in Ladok regularly.

We will meet in a virtual classroom using Zoom. The link to each module’s online classroom will be posted on Canvas. To participate in the online meetings, you must make sure you have a well-functioning headset with a microphone instead of the microphone on the computer only, as well as a good camera.

Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offenses that result in failing the module in question and being reported to the university’s disciplinary board. You are required to take a knowledge test about cheating on Canvas before you submit any assignments in the course.
