About the programme

The first semester begins with two compulsory courses of 15 credits each. One course is offered in our research profile ‘Health-promoting working life’ (Hälsofrämjande arbetsliv) and the other contains in-depth knowledge of research methods in social work. In the second semester, students have the opportunity to choose courses that interest them for a total of 30 credits. In semester three, students complete degree projects in the form of a Master’s thesis for 30 credits. In semester four, students have the opportunity to once again choose courses for a total of 30 credits. All courses are taught on a part-time basis, which means that students who wish to study full-time can take several courses in the same semester. There is also an option to write the degree thesis on a part-time basis.

Students who are admitted to the Master’s programme and who have studied advanced courses, such as within a social work programme or equivalent, may have the option to receive credit for these courses as part of the programme, provided that they correspond to one of the elective courses in the Master’s programme at the University of Gävle.

In addition to the elective courses given within the Master’s programme, students also have the option to choose from advanced level independent courses in social work that are offered at the University of Gävle.

The language of instruction is predominantly Swedish with parts of English. There is an opportunity to write the individual exam and other individual assignments in English. Some elective courses are conducted in English. In these courses you will be able to write individual exams and other individual assignments in Swedish

Students learn through literature studies, seminars, lectures, case studies, and guidance. The programme is offered as distance education. In this case, distance education means that students are expected to attend seminars and lectures at the University of Gävle about 5 times per semester.
